Diabetes Forecast has a list the “14 ‘Next Big Thing’ Diabetes Care Products,” including Google’s idea of a contact lens that measures blood glucose. When news about the contact lens broke months ago, it sounded almost too good to be true. With DF putting the technology on its list, I might have to reassess my thinking.
Google is partnering with Novartis, the Swiss pharmaceutical giant. Neither company has an official timeline to start selling glucose-monitoring contact lenses, but Forbes quoted Novartis chief executive Joe Jimenez’ statements in Reuters and the Wall Street Journal that the company hopes to commercialize the product within five years with a “large revenue stream.”
